Let Us Pray For a Clean Environment

August 18th, 2010 by truetaval

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Everybody’s doing it: Evangelicals, Episcopalians, Southern Baptists, Roman Catholics, Jews, Buddhists, and Muslims. Prayer in response to the oil spill has become a form of social action for creation. If you haven’t been invited to a prayer vigil in the past 100 days, perhaps you haven’t checked your Facebook page, or you are don’t believe in having believers as friends.

This national appeal to God may have seemed like a naïve cry for help in an overwhelming situation. But the groundswell of prayer now has become a collective spiritual response to a national ecological crisis.

The hundreds of thousands of hands joined together in prayer – literally from sea to shining sea – reflect a growing and united religious environmental movement. If people of faith and environmentalists can harness this momentum, at a time when every household in the country is bearing witness to the oil spill, their power could be transformative.

In my childhood home of Fairhope, Ala., family friend Kelley Wolff Lyons organized an interfaith candlelight vigil called the Blessing of the Bay that drew 150 people at sunset to the shores of Mobile Bay. When I went home for the Fourth of July, I too prayed for this sacred space, where boom lined the coast like yellow Legos in the water.

Religious groups including the Southern Baptist Convention, the National Council of Churches, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have issued statements against the oil spill and calls to protect God’s creation for future generations. Prayer in response to this disaster has brought together faith traditions that often seem more divided than united by toxic issues.

A study conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion in Public Life showed strong consensus across religions for environmental protection, in contrast to divisive issues such as abortion and gay marriage. This shared value provides powerful common ground for the 85% of the U.S. population who identify with a religious affiliation.

After the Southern Baptist Convention, evangelical leader Russell D. Moore described the oil spill as a Roe v. Wade moment, a time for evangelicals to recognize their responsibility as Christians to care for creation. After touring the Louisiana coast with Christian, Muslim, and Jewish leaders, the Rev. Sally Bingham called the spill “an insult to God and a sin against creation.” As first responders to disaster, people of faith from diverse traditions are cleaning up the oil, providing financial assistance to families, and praying.

For the past three months, I have repeated a prayer in response to the oil spill that is taped on my fridge. Now I am ready to fall to my knees with a new prayer for action, advocacy, and reflection that could transform our relationship with the earth. This prayer for the future stems from my deep grief over the violation of a place – the Alabama Gulf Coast – where I feel closest to God.

As an environmentalist, I pray that environmental organizations will view faith communities as serious allies for action. Such alliances have formed in my current hometown where North Carolina Interfaith Power and Light has partnered with a green jobs training program, Asheville GO, to involve congregations in weatherizing 300 low-income homes. Across the country, people of faith are holding carbon fasts during Lent and installing solar panels on churches based on a moral imperative for justice and care of creation.

As a mother, I pray that this partnership results in powerful lobbying for public policy that supports healthy communities for my children’s future. Such legislative success is evident in the work of Earth Ministry and the Environmental Priorities Coalition, a network of 25 environmental groups in Washington State that advocates for environmental legislation. As the only faith-based organization in the network, Earth Ministry provides advocacy training for people of faith to lobby for issues like clean water, green jobs, and renewable energy.

As a Christian, I pray that reflection and prayer become strategies for a new environmental movement that inspires hope in the midst of uncertainty. Religious leaders like Martin Luther King used prayer to influence radical social change in our country. Prayer provides the space for discernment, so we stay quiet long enough to open ourselves to the improbable. We need that space to confront not only the devastating impacts of the oil spill, but also the long-term reality of climate change.

Theologian Karl Barth said “to clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder in the world.” The kingdom of heaven is now, not pie in the sky, waiting for us at St. Peter’s gates. Now let us pray.

What Are Minnetonka Moccasins?

August 17th, 2010 by truetaval

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Well ladies, pack up all those pairs of shoes which shine and shimmer as old as the dusty swirly air in the sunlight, because the new fashioned, the perfect, the ultimate classic, the one and only- Women’s Minnetonka Moccasins are here!

Well, the high, tripping heeled menaces are out through the door, and so fling the ‘earthy’, simple, comfortable moccasins into your wardrobe collection. Why, that sounds too dreary to you? If it does, it will turn out to be the biggest miss in your life! The style of these pairs of moccasins might be simple, but they are nothing like the ordinary. They sport vivid, vibrant, contemporary hues that can draw the surrounding pairs of eyeballs to your feet instantly. There are some facts that are absolutely not expendable.

o The word moccasin came from the Virginia Algonquian Native American language, being used for the first time in the year 1612, and most likely it has been derived from the Powhatan (makasin “shoe”). There are other similar existing words like Ojibwa (makasin) and even Narragansett (mokussin).

o The shoes are extremely comfortable to wear since they are so soft. Being pliant, and absolutely noiseless, they were the perfect choice for the hunters in the old days. They are made of genuine leather, being often made of deer skin. They soak up water pretty easily, and have proper traction so that your feet can stay where they should be: down on the ground, and not up in the air!

o These moccasins have a traditional touch in them, and so you can often notice one ornamented with shells and beads. These shoes were a rage in the deserts and plains of the western world, since their hard soles protected the owner’s feet from the harsh pebbles and cacti. The Apache moccasins even had the turned up toe so that the small rocky grains and thorns were not able to jab the people’s feet.

o The moccasins are mainly very tribal in their outlook, and their ornamentation rather depends on the tribe that used them. There are many variations in the styles used to decorate the women’s Minnetonka moccasins, and one of them includes decorative tongues. Some even have tassels made of leather hanging from behind so as to sweep the footprints away and thus erase the tracks.

o The different patterns of moccasins worn by different tribes were so distinctive that it was possible to state which tribe the footprint of the man actually belonged to. For example, Iroquois moccasins had a wide bottom area, while, the tribes in the eastern forests preferred moccasins which were rather thin.

o It is not that all moccasins were well-ornamented. The decoration solely depended on the purpose of the wear. The hunters wore moccasins which carried nothing but a piece of leather around the foot. Moccasins for marriage were decked with beads and shells on the top. Moccasins were also made and buried with the dead, so that they could be worn in the after-life by the spirits. These were decorated with beads on the top, sides and also under the soles.

o Sometimes, velvet clothes were attached to the cuff of the moccasin, and several patterns were used, like floral and geometric designs. Inspired by the original moccasins, many new styles like the Australian and Celtic moccasins have also sprung up. So, ladies, women’s Minnetonka moccasins are easily available, and they could satiate your fancy immensely!

How I Found Moccasin Boots Online

August 14th, 2010 by truetaval

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Not long ago I made a small but very pleasant discovery for myself. But I don’t want to reveal what the discovery was from the very beginning, so let me start with some not so long introductory remarks.

Until recently if I needed to buy a new pair of shoes I did it on Saturday, because that day I didn’t have to go to the office. Frankly speaking, it wasn’t very pleasant, but I had no choice as I work five days a week from morning till the late evening. So, I usually spent about half of my day off visiting dozens of shops (but not because I have a non-standard foot, but because I’m a very fastidious person) and trying various shoes, when I finally returned home I was tired and worn-out. Everything I wanted at the end of the day was silence and a cup of good coffee. Between us — I hate shopping in general!

Nearly a month ago I told this problem to a friend of mine who advised me to visit online stores. Frankly speaking I didn’t think that it was a good idea, but I decided to try.

I have Internet access at home, so after my friend left I turned on my computer and put in a search engine a phrase like “buy shoes”. I was surprised that it found so many online shops for me. It found not only online stores, but a lot of interesting sites and forums where other people shared their experience in choosing shoes, expressed their opinion about shoes of this or that company, and compared prices in different online shops, etc.

I looked through the range of shoes in about ten stores, I saw many models, compared prices, read about shoes companies, etc. And finally I found women’s moccasins clearance where I placed an order without hesitation. I prefer moccasins because they are comfortable, practical and look very nice. I’m really a hard-to-please customer, but on the Internet I found what I was looking for. I placed an order and they delivered me my moccasins in a day. I remained greatly satisfied!
